For years, Chiropractors have observed patients of all ages that are under regular chiropractic care, report experiencing fewer infections. Why do people insist that Chiropractic care protects them from sickness? What does the science say?
Chiropractic adjustments reduce interference to the nervous system’s ability to perform optimally. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body—including the immune system—chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function. One of the reasons people are stuck in the sympathetic or stress modes of their nervous system is because of vertebral subluxations (misalignments in the spine). Physiologists have proposed that vertebral subluxations are associated with exaggerated sympathetic activity and that by correcting these, we can restore the body back towards the more normal and healthy resting tone.
One study performed by Dr. Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute measured the immune systems of people under chiropractic care as compared to those in the general population and those with cancer and other serious diseases. His initial three-year study was comprised of 107 individuals who had been under chiropractic care for five years or more. The chiropractic patients were found to have a 200% greater immune competence than those people who had not received chiropractic care, and they had 400% greater immune competence than those people with cancer and other serious diseases. The immune system’s superiority of those under chiropractic care did not appear to diminish with age.
A functioning immune system protects us from infectious diseases by providing adaptive measures to overcome the ill effects of bacteria and viruses. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system. As winter approaches, people are being reminded of the upcoming “dreaded flu season”, asking how they can instead support their normal, natural immunity.
Another study performed in 1991 by Patricia Brennan, Ph.D., demonstrated that when a chiropractic manipulation was applied to the thoracic region (mid-back), the white blood cell response taken from blood collected 15 minutes after the manipulation was significantly higher than blood collected 15 minutes before the chiropractic adjustment. This research demonstrated a respiratory burst, which is needed for our immune cells to overcome viruses and bacteria.
Chiropractic focuses on restoring function to the body by enhancing the performance of the nervous system. Chiropractic helps restore the nervous system to it’s natural, optimal state. When the bones in your spine become misaligned, it prevents the body from properly functioning and leads to a decrease in optimal health. When you see your Mount Juliet Chiropractor routinely, you will get a consistent check of your spine to correct subluxations soon after they occur. This approach is proactive, rather than reactive, and is a necessary component for your well-being.
